is a London-based design studio that explores the truth and potential of materials through deep investigation. Our practice examines authenticity, resilience, and aesthetics by engaging in dialogue with organic systems. Rooted in material philosophy, we create functional products that transcend cultural borders, questioning how the history embedded in nature reshapes our understanding of endurance. At the intersection of identity, environmental preservation, and decadence, we delve into functional design redefining its boundaries and possibilities.
Our inaguaral exploration takes a look at jute, a vegetable fibre, primarily derived from the stems of the Corchorus plant (mainly Corchorus olitorius and Corchorus capsularis). Known as the "Golden Fibre" for its silky golden-brown hue, jute is one of the most sustainable natural fibres in the world.
Nature's Golden Fibre
A Jute Story
Jute is a living testament to nature's artistry and human craftsmanship. Known affectionately as the "Golden Fiber" for its warm, sun-kissed glow, jute emerges from the fertile floodplains of the Ganges Delta, where geography and tradition intertwine to create something truly extraordinary.
This fiber represents nature's beautiful paradox: delicate yet incredibly durable, rustic yet refined, humble yet undeniably luxurious. As a bast fiber harvested from the slender stalks of the Corchorus plant, jute thrives in the humid, alluvial soils of Bengal without need for artificial intervention.
It's signature golden sheen is a product of the sun and soil, resulting in a distinctive warm, honeyed glow that improves with age. Despite it's delicate appearance, jute possesses a quiet strength that boasts high tensile strength while developing a beautiful vintage patina over time.
The journey of jute from field to finished product is a masterclass in slow, intentional craftsmanship. Each jute rug narrates every step of it's creation: hand-harvested at peak maturity, then retted in slow-moving waters to unlock its silky fibers. Artisans spin the yarn using traditional taklis (spindles), with each strand bearing subtle variations that serve as fingerprints of human touch. The weaving process on wooden looms creates textures with irregularities that bear the marks of authenticity giving each piece its unique character.
Jute breathes, changes, and evolves over time, developing its own narrative. It carries centuries of tradition and craft that is representative of the sustainable collaboration between earth and artisan. Transcending trends, jute connects us to the natural world and to generations of skilled craftspeople. Each jute textile, is a chapter in an ongoing story of sustainability, beauty, and human ingenuity.
'GBO' is our jute rug series that creates patterns from geographical lines and landscapes to unravel the aesthetic truth behind the fibers. By reintroducing this material through this lens we reveal it's untold layers where ecology, craft, and design converge to produce a deluxe grade textile document.
Col.1 is inspired by the geographical lines and regional landmarks in Igbo land (Eastern Nigeria), featured in a variety of local hues.
'GBO' is a term given to an elderly statesman in some regions of Eastern Nigeria, lending a sense of heritage and legacy to this collection. It is also a poignant play on words with 'IGBO', the region that is the focus of our inaugural collection.
